Set in 1970 America, with its backdrop of rising feminism, school busing, and military families. Tillie, an 8-year old girl must deal with the slow disintegration of her family as her free-spirited and eccentric mother slowly sinks into mental illness.

When her father moves them to Washington DC, Tilly is sent away until they get settled, only to discover when she finally moves into her new home that her mother is nowhere to be found.

What happened to her it a dark family secret that I won’t reveal here, but I challenge you not to gasp at the end of Chapter 21 when a plot twist you didn’t see coming is revealed.
